Please Bear With Me

cleopatrajones1.jpgFrom Invisible Woman: I need to fiddle around for the next few days until I’m up to speed on WordPress. You’ll probably see some changes ths week, but I’ll keep posting….love!

Not Going Away, Apparently

From D-Listed:

Disney is apparently working on a big-screen version of their Broadway musical version of the classic story of Aida by Elton John. Disney reportedly wants Beyonce to the play the title role. The studio only wants Beyonce and if she signs on the project is a go. At this point, I have nothing to say. Hollywood and Disney fuck everything up, so why not this. Have at it!

From Invisible Woman: **sigh**

Whachu talkin’ bout Willis?

From Bossip:

“Afroman”, the dude known for that song “Because I Got High”, can add filmmaker to his list of credentials. Joseph “Afroman” Foreman is working on his first film titled Waiting to Inhale a spoof of the 1995 “when a woman’s fed up” movie of the decade Waiting to Exhale. As lame as it sounds, it sounds like it might be worth watching especially for all of you that enjoy movies like Friday, How High, and Harold and Kumar Go to Whitecastle.

From Invisible Woman: Huh?

btw, that is an actual picture of “Afroman”

Hmmmm…..

Is anybody buying this relationship?

Hell Up In Harlem

That’s actually the name of a 1970′s flick, but I’m going off the beaten path a bit today.

Mrs. Grapevine (check out her site) was kind enough to forward this info to me, and since I have love for y’all New York people, I wanted to post it.

There will be an all black production of Romeo and Juliet outdoors in Harlem; let’s hope there isn’t a raincloud in sight:

THE CLASSICAL THEATRE OF HARLEM “Romeo and Juliet” runs July 27-28 in Von King Park, Brooklyn; Aug. 4-5 in Marcus Garvey Park, Harlem; Aug. 9-10 in Tompkins Square Park, Manhattan. (212) 564-9983; classicaltheatreofharlem.org.

Can’t Say Enough About This One….

Yesterday I mistakenly posted the wrong Wattstax clip of Isaac Hayes and Shaft, but here is a trailer for the movie “Wattstax”. I have to say it again; this is one of the best black films ever made, and even though it was before my time and I’m sure most of yours, it is a perfect snapshot of the black community in the 70′s.

Richard Pryor is speaking the gospel throughout; he is not playin’.

All Shaft, All Day

“Shaft” (not Samuel Jackson), “Shaft Goes To Africa”, and “Shaft’s Big Score” all today on TV One. Watch it today with your drunk uncle at the BBQ (we all have one of those). :-)

The “Shaft” music clip above is from one of the best black films of all time “Wattstax”. It was filmed at an all day concert in Watts in the early 70′s, and combines man on the street commentary about the social issues of the day. The performances are amazing, the clothes, the scenery, the hair-I love everything about this movie. But I digress….enjoy the Shaft marathon.

Happy 4th of July, I Think

Even though we all know that that the 4th of July is a bit of an ironic joke in our community, I hope you enjoy your day off BBQing or websurfing with a beer. I’ll leave you with a preview of “Who’s Your Caddy?” which in my opinion, would have done well to open today…I’m sure some people will say it is a ghettoized version of “Caddyshack” and spark some “Norbit” like debate, but once in a while I just like to laugh and not think. This movie looks perfect for that.

It stars some of my favorite black comedians–Faizon Love, Tony Cox, Finesse Mitchell, Garrett Morris, Bruce Bruce and Terry Crews (who makes me laugh in everything I see him in). Others are Big Boi from Outkast, Lil’ Wayne, Tamala Jones, James Avery, Jenifer Lewis, and Sherri Shephard. Whew, that’s a lotta Black Hollywood.

To all of my international readers, have a great day too!

Talk to Me Trailer

What, No Drug Dealers?

Finally, a black film with no drug and gun dilemmas, and no classrooms going from foolios to Rhodes Scholars. The new movie “Talk To Me” is coming out soon, and stars Don Cheadle, Taraji P. Henson, Cedric the Entertainer, Mike Epps, Keith Sweat (?!), Chiwetal Eljofor, and Vondie Curtis-Hall. As you can see, lots of Black Hollywood. It is also directed by one of the first really well known black female directors, Kasi Lemmons, who directed one of my faves , “Eve’s Bayou” and “The Caveman’s Valentine “(shout out to Purple Zoe!). She also happens to be the wife of Vondie Curtis-Hall.

This is the synopsis from IMDB:
The true life story of Ralph Waldo “Petey” Greene Jr. In the mid-to-late 1960s, in Washington, D.C., vibrant soul music and exploding social consciousness were combining to unique and powerful effect. It was the place and time for Petey to fully express himself – sometimes to outrageous effect – and “tell it like it is.”

With the support of his irrepressible and tempestuous girlfriend Vernell, the newly minted ex-con talks his way into an on-air radio gig. He forges a friendship and a partnership with fellow prison inmate Milo’s brother Dewey Hughes. From the first wild morning on the air, Petey relies on the more straight-laced Dewey to run interference at WOL-AM, where Dewey is the program director. At the station, Petey becomes an iconic radio personality, surpassing even the established popularity of his fellow disc jockeys, Nighthawk and Sunny Jim. Combining biting humor with social commentary, Petey openly courts controversy for station owner E.G. Sonderling. Petey was determined to make not just himself but his community heard during an exciting and turbulent period in American history.

As Petey’s voice, humor, and spirit surge across the airwaves with the vitality of the era, listeners tune in to hear not only incredible music but also a man speaking directly to them about race and power in America like few people ever have.

From Invisible Woman: Sounds great to me. Like the concept, like the cast….I love seeing movies about blacks in other eras….I just hope it can keep up with the summertime/blockbuster crowd, though.

side note trivia…this dude was the first person to ever interview howard stern

Jamie Foxx Drama

From “The Hollywood Reporter

“Lackawanna Blues” helmer George C. Wolfe is set to direct the Jamie Foxx starrer “Blood on the Leaves” for Paramount Pictures.

Based on Jeffrey Stetson’s 2004 novel, the story centers on a district attorney who grapples with feelings of revenge as he prosecutes a black history professor on trial for the murders of white men accused of crimes against blacks during the Civil Rights movement. The studio is searching for a second male lead.Foxx, Marcus King and Jaime Rucker King are producing through their Paramount-based Foxxhole shingle.Paramount’s Brad Weston and Elizabeth Raposo are shepherding the project for the studio.Wolfe won a DGA Award for directing the HBO ensemble drama “Lackawanna,” for which he also was nominated for an Emmy.

From Invisible Woman: I know this will be waaay better than it sounds.

Black Snake Moan

I just finished watching “Black Snake Moan” after renting it 2 times before and never getting to it. There was something about the subject matter, a black former blues singer (Samuel Jackson) trying to save a young white town slut from her sex addiction (Christina Ricci) by chaining her to the house, that just didn’t seem appealing to me.

Yes, it was strange, and slow, and long, but in the end it redeemed itself. It was simply a tale of when we are able to let our guards down, and reveal our faults to those who will not judge us but love us unconditionally, there is absolutely nothing better in life.

I won’t talk about it too much, though, because
I don’t really consider it black cinema, though Samuel Jackson’s in it and John Singleton produced. I would like to take a second to comment on his choice of roles for the past few years, which are, for lack of a better phrase, just plain wierd.

I am baffled about why someone would voluntarily choose to do “Snakes on a Plane”, “Formula 51″, “Freedomland”, “The Man” “The Caveman’s Valentine” and “S.W.A.T” for any reason other than a paycheck. I found all of these films painful to watch. Besides the fact that he seems to do a movie a week, the only time I really enjoy him is when he collaborates with Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown).

I’m hoping he has paid for all of his mortgages and will settle down a bit. At least in “Black Snake Moan” he wasn’t yelling.

Ummm….okay

From the sweetie Coco LaRue at the eclectic blog Thursday Nite Fever:

The New York Post reports that acclaimed film director Spike Lee plans to direct a Broadway revival of Stalag 17 in early 2008.British actor Clive Owen will likely star in the play, which bowed on Broadway in 1951 at the 48th Street Theatre. Jose Ferrer directed the original Broadway run.The play, penned by former prisoners of war Donald Bevan and Edmund Trzcinski, is set in December 1944 in a barrack of Stalag 17 in Germany during the Second World War.

The original Broadway production officially opened May 8, 1951, and played 472 performances at the 48th Street Theatre before closing June 21, 1952. The cast featured John Ericson as Sefton and Mark Roberts as Dunbar. The 1953 film, directed by Billy Wilder, cast William Holden as Seftonand Don Taylor as Lt. Dunbar with Otto Preminger as Col. Von Scherbach.

Stalag 17 would mark the Broadway bow for Lee.

Michael Abbott, according to the New York Times, will produce the Broadway revival. Abbott was a 21-year-old producer when Stalag 17 made its premiere at Off-Broadway’s Lambs Club before transferring to Broadway. Abbott told the Times that for the upcoming production he wants “something a little more exciting. . . I don’t want anyone to say it’s a revival. It’s really not a revival, it’s a new production.”Director Lee added, “I just don’t want to do the old okey-doke thing, dust off some old piece and make a revival. If I’m going to make this venture, this debut to the stage, I have to try to come up with some things that are going to make it interesting for me.”Both Abbott and Lee would like a multiracial cast and more authentic interactions among the prisoners.

From Invisible Woman: Interesting. I can’t imagine how this is going to turn out, but at least someone’s taking chances. Btw, “Hogan’s Heroes” was based on Stalag 17.

For All The "Boojee" People Out There…

I kid, I kid. Mark your calenders for the 5th annual Martha’s Vineyard African-American Film Festival, held from August 8th to 11th. Submissions were closed down June 15th, but you can still take a little vacay and support black film in one of America’s most beautiful destination points. Martha’s Vineyard in the summer was the setting for Matty Rich’s film “The Inkwell” with Larenz Tate, Morris Chestnut and Jada Pinkett-Smith (but see it anyway).

Here is the link for the festival: http://www.mvaaff.com/

Throwback Heaven

I am LOVIN’ TV One right now. In my opinion, they are much more relevant on what the black community wants to see than BET. One of the things I like best about them is their “Throwback Theatre” which features black film from the 30′s to the present, some of them rarely seen.

Today they are showing “Uptown Saturday Night”, “Let’s Do It Again” (both with Sidney Poiter and Bill Cosby), as well as the mecca of black exploitation flicks “Superfly”.

Most film lovers have seen these films, but what I want to comment on is the amazing soundtracks of these and other black 70′s films. Can you imagine “Superfly” or “Claudine” or even “The Mack” without the music? Not even half as memorable. So if you get a chance to check out these films this weekend, pay close attention to the genius music by Curtis Mayfield and others. TV One’s website is http://www.tvoneonline.com/. Represent!

BK Stand Up!

Even though I grew up in Cali, I spent some of the best years of my life in the Brooklyn black bohemian scene while living in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill. So when I came across this film, it was of special interest to me for a couple of reasons…

“Sundays in Fort Greene” is about two sisters trying not to be pulled into the world of their drug addicted mother. It is produced by Meagan Good’s production company, Freedom Bridge Entertainment. She plays one of the sisters, who is also a lesbiana (above). Shooting started last week.

Interesting. 1) I can only remember Spike Lee flicks filmed in Fort Greene, so it should be interesting to watch and 2) Meagan Good has a production company?

btw…are there palm trees in Brooklyn? I’m just sayin’

Well, Maybe Just This Once…..

“Rush Hour 3″ may be the firat blockbuster I’ve wanted to see in eons, though from the trailer it is looking a bit suspect.

Chris Tucker was in my favorite movie of all time, “Friday” and I have been a fan ever since. He looks a lot different now, I hope his antics still work for him. Kudos to the $25 million dollar payday plus domestic profits–parlay, parlay!

WTF?…Volume 2

From Stereohyped (an excellent blog by the way):

I hope that the production of this ridiculous movie Eddie Murphy’s filming in NYC involving clowns doesn’t suffer because of the news that he of the interesting career and personal choices is indeed the biological father of Angel Iris Murphy Brown.

I know this post is supposed to be about paternity tests, but didn’t we all already know what the outcome would be? Let’s talk about “Starship Dave”, the plot of which is even more foolish than the picture above suggests. Here’s the outline, according to IMDB:

A crew of miniature aliens operate a spaceship that has a human form. While trying to save their planet, the aliens encounter a new problem, as their ship becomes smitten with an Earth woman. (invisible woman-WTF?!)

Two things. Number 1, this is a rip-off of Innerspace. That may be okay, since most of you probably don’t know what that is. Number 2, really, Eddie Murphy? This is the type of post-Oscar-nomination work you’re choosing for yourself? At least it’s one less movie little Angel will have to see featuring her dad in a black woman fat suit. I hope.

From Invisible Woman: I don’t know what is going on in this picture, and I don’t wanna know. Way to save your career, Eddie.

Peaceful Journey

A peaceful journey to Anderson Jones, one of the very few well-known black film critics out there. He was a correspondent/reporter for the E! Channel and died last week of a massive heart attack. He was only 38.

An Open Letter To Isaiah Washington

Dear Isaiah:

I know the hoopla surrounding you as of late is television related, but a lot of people either forget or don’t know that you had a fairly sizable and promising film career at one point, before the whole “f” word debacle . It included some very thoughtful, well-acted performances….you were kinda pre-Don Cheadle before Don Cheadle.

Anyhoo, the whole Larry King promised rampage thing is ill-advised. I read today that NBC is in talks with you for some new projects, but they have somewhat stalled…..it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that they are watching what you’ll do next, closely.

Listen, in the words of Kimora Lee Simmons from her book “Faboulosity” when there is a scandal, either completely act like it never happened, or, own up to it-then keep it moving and act like it never happened. Say what you will about Kimora, but she always bounces back like a cat. Can you remember even half the scandals she’s been associated with? (btw, there are many).

I saw a picture of you yesterday smiling, looking relaxed…keep doing that every day till you get your power deal together. Do it in your sleep. And for God’s sake, believe me, we all are tired of hearing about the T.R. thing. I hate to side with one of your heinous former co-stars, but if you don’t do anything else for the next 2 weeks JUST BE QUIET!!

I say this with love,

Invisible Woman
